What Is an Inline Centrifugal Fan?

An inline centrifugal fan is a duct-mounted fan that uses centrifugal airflow rather than moving air straight along the fan axis. Suncourt’s Centrax® fans use backward-inclined blades and are designed to provide high volume and pressure for exhaust and ventilation applications.

The collection includes multiple inline centrifugal fans for 4-inch and 6-inch duct applications. The available models share the core Centrax® design, while corded configurations add a power cord for installation convenience.

How Does a Centrifugal Fan Differ From an Axial Duct Fan?

A centrifugal fan and an axial fan move air differently. A centrifugal design redirects air outward from the center of the impeller, while an axial fan moves air primarily along the fan axis. This makes the centrifugal inline fans in Suncourt’s Centrax® line suited to exhaust and ventilation applications where higher airflow or pressure may be required.

For comparison, Suncourt’s Inductor® axial in-line booster duct fans are designed to boost airflow in forced-air heating and cooling systems. The right fan type depends on the application, ductwork, system resistance, and required airflow.

Suncourt also notes that more CFM is not automatically better. Proper fan sizing considers the application and system conditions.

Can an Inline Centrifugal Duct Fan Be Used for Exhaust and Ventilation?

Yes. An inline centrifugal duct fan can be installed within a duct run to move air for exhaust or ventilation. Suncourt describes Centrax® fans as suitable for residential, light commercial, and greenhouse applications and lists high volume and pressure as key characteristics.

Centrax® fans are also watertight and rated for indoor/outdoor use, and Suncourt states that they can be installed in any position. The housing uses UV-protected, flame-retardant thermal plastic resin, while vibration-absorbing material helps reduce vibration transfer during operation.

What About Filtered Centrifugal Supply Ventilators?

The phrase filtered centrifugal supply ventilators describes a broader ventilation category in which a centrifugal fan supplies air and filtration is part of the system. It should not be used to imply that the Centrax® fan itself includes filtration: Suncourt describes the Centrax® collection for exhaust and ventilation, and its published specifications do not identify these fans as filtered supply ventilators.

If a project requires filtered outdoor-air supply, filtration, conditioning, and fan selection should be evaluated as part of the complete ventilation system. Choose the Right Centrax® Configuration

The collection currently includes four models: 4-inch TF104, 4-inch TF104-CRD with a 10-foot power cord, 6-inch TF106, and 6-inch TF106-CRD.

Variable-speed control options are available. Suncourt’s VS100 hardwire variable-speed fan control is listed as compatible with Centrax® centrifugal fans.

Where Can Centrax® Fans Be Used?

Centrax® fans are designed for residential, light commercial, and greenhouse applications where exhaust or ventilation requires high volume and pressure. The 6-inch TF106 is also identified by Suncourt as ideal for radon mitigation applications.

For radon mitigation, fan selection should be treated as part of the complete system. Suncourt’s Centrax® Radon Mitigation Fan Kits package a Centrax® fan with components intended for sub-slab depressurization applications.

Note: Fan performance depends on the application, ductwork, system resistance, and installation. Select the fan based on complete system requirements rather than airflow alone. Follow manufacturer instructions and applicable local requirements.
