How to choose MAKE-UP AIR INTAKE

Replace Exhausted Air With Controlled Makeup Air

Exhaust fans and range hoods remove air from a home as they operate. When air leaves the building faster than replacement air enters, the resulting pressure imbalance can affect how air moves through the home.

A makeup air intake provides a controlled path for outdoor air to enter as exhaust equipment operates. This can be particularly relevant for applications involving range hoods and other exhaust fans that move substantial volumes of air.

For a closer look at how these systems work in residential ventilation, see Suncourt's guide to makeup air intake systems.

Suncourt Make-Up Air Intake Kits are designed to automatically coordinate the intake damper with connected exhaust equipment. The included current sensing switch detects electrical current from the connected device and activates the motorized damper. When the exhaust equipment stops operating, the damper returns toward its normally closed position.

Unlike systems that rely on a pressure switch, the Suncourt kit uses current sensing to provide the interlock signal. This allows the makeup air intake to respond directly to operation of the connected exhaust equipment.

The kit combines a motorized damper, 24V transformer, and current sensing switch in one system. The damper uses a 2-wire hysteresis gear motor and includes an adjustable coupler with set points from 0–90° in both powered and unpowered positions.

Suncourt offers the kit in six duct diameters to accommodate different installation requirements.

Note: Makeup air requirements vary by building, exhaust equipment, ventilation design, and applicable codes. The correct intake size and system configuration should be determined for the specific application. Review the manufacturer's installation instructions and applicable local requirements before installation.

Key Benefits:

  • Current sensing automatically coordinates the makeup air damper with connected exhaust equipment.
  • Motorized damper provides controlled opening and closing of the outdoor air intake.
  • 24V operation uses the included low-voltage transformer.
  • Available in 4”, 5”, 6”, 8”, 10”, and 12” duct diameters.
  • Galvanized steel damper construction provides a durable solution for HVAC airflow control.
  • Adjustable coupler allows 0–90° positioning in powered and unpowered positions.
  • Engineered and assembled in the USA.
  • 3-year limited warranty.

Control Airflow With a Motorized Damper

The motorized damper controls the makeup air path, opening when the connected exhaust equipment operates and returning toward its normally closed position when the equipment stops.

Suncourt offers a range of motorized dampers for HVAC airflow control, including dampers designed for fresh air intake and makeup air applications.

The damper used in the makeup air kit features galvanized steel construction, a 20-gauge blade, and an adjustable coupler with 0–90° set points in both powered and unpowered positions. Suncourt specifies less than 5% air leakage when the damper is fully closed.

For more information about the role of airflow dampers in HVAC systems, see Suncourt's guide.

Category FAQ
01 What is a makeup air kit?
A makeup air kit provides a controlled way to introduce outdoor air into a building when exhaust equipment removes air. Suncourt's Make-Up Air Intake Kit uses a motorized damper, 24V transformer, and current sensing switch to coordinate outdoor air intake with connected exhaust equipment.
02 Why is makeup air needed?
Exhaust equipment removes air from a building. If sufficient replacement air is not available, the building can experience negative pressure. A makeup air intake provides a controlled path for outdoor air to replace some of the air being exhausted. Whether a makeup air system is required depends on the building, exhaust equipment, ventilation design, and applicable local requirements.
03 How does the Suncourt makeup air kit work?
The included current sensing switch detects electrical current from the connected range hood or exhaust fan. When the equipment operates, the switch activates the motorized damper to open the makeup air intake. When the equipment stops, the damper returns toward its normally closed position.
04 Does the Suncourt kit use a pressure switch?
No. The Suncourt Make-Up Air Intake Kit uses a current sensing switch to detect operation of the connected exhaust equipment. The switch provides the interlock signal used to operate the motorized damper.
05 What is a makeup air vent?
A makeup air vent is an opening or exterior termination through which outdoor air enters a building as part of a makeup air system. The Suncourt kit controls the airflow path using a motorized damper, while the complete installation also includes the appropriate ductwork and exterior termination for the application.
06 What sizes are available?
Suncourt Make-Up Air Intake Kits are available in 4-inch, 5-inch, 6-inch, 8-inch, 10-inch, and 12-inch diameters. The appropriate size depends on the requirements of the ventilation system and connected exhaust equipment.
07 What is included in the makeup air intake kit?
The kit includes a motorized damper, 24V transformer, and current sensing switch.
08 Is the Suncourt makeup air kit low voltage?
The motorized damper operates at 24V and is supplied by the included transformer. Suncourt specifies the transformer for 120 VAC, 60 Hz input and 24 VAC, 60 Hz, 15 VA output.
09 How should a makeup air system be installed?
The makeup air kit should be installed as part of the overall ventilation system. Duct size, intake location, exterior termination, electrical connections, connected exhaust equipment, and applicable building requirements should all be considered. Suncourt provides Make-Up Air Intake Kit installation instructions for the system.
